Through on-the-ground interventions in more than 23 cities across nine countries, UrbanShift implements multi-sectoral solutions to critical urban challenges, demonstrating pilot approaches that can be scaled up and replicated in other neighborhoods and cities.
Argentina
One of the largest economies in South America, Argentina is home to 45.4 million people, of which 92% live in urban areas. UrbanShift is engaged in five cities in Argentina: Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Mendoza, Salta and Ushuaia.
Brazil
Brazil is the most biologically diverse country on the planet and the sixth most populous. Of its 212 million inhabitants, 87% reside in urban areas. UrbanShift supports three cities in Brazil: Belém, Florianópolis and Teresina.
Costa Rica
Located in Central America, Costa Rica is a global leader in environmental protection and home to about 5 million people, 80% of whom live in cities. UrbanShift is engaged in the Metropolitan Area of San José (the GAM), which includes the capital.
Morocco
Morocco is home to over 36 million inhabitants and has the third largest economy in North Africa. UrbanShift is engaged in the city of Marrakech, which comprises about 5% of Morocco’s urban population.
Rwanda
Rwanda is located in the Great Lakes region of East Africa and has an urban population of about 2.2 million. UrbanShift is engaged in the capital, Kigali, as well as six additional cities: Huye, Muhanga, Musanze, Nyagatare, Rubavu and Rusizi.
Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone is one of Africa’s smallest countries by size, with an urban population of 3.4 million. UrbanShift is engaged in Freetown and seven additional cities: Western Area District, Makeni, Koidu New Sembehun, Kenema, Bo, Port Loko and Bonthe.
India
India is one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and accounts for over 17% of the global population. UrbanShift works in five Indian cities: Chennai, Pune and Surat, as well as Agra and the Puducherry Union Territory.
China
With a population of 1.4 billion, China is the most populous country in the world and the second-largest economy. UrbanShift is engaged in three cities and one city cluster in China: Chengdu, Chongqing, Ningbo, and Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle.
Indonesia
Home to more than 270 million people, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world and the largest economy in Southeast Asia. UrbanShift is engaged in five cities in Indonesia: Jakarta, Balikpapan, Semarang, Bitung and Palembang.
