UrbanShift at Biodiversity COP15
The Biodiversity COP15 saw the adoption of the post-2020 framework, which provides a roadmap for biodiversity conservation, protection, restoration & management for the next decade. Read about UrbanShift's participation at the conference.
Despite ongoing efforts, biodiversity is deteriorating worldwide and this decline is projected to worsen with business-as-usual scenarios. The 15th UN Biodiversity Conference, taking place in Montreal, Canada, in December 2022, will convene governments from around the world to agree to a new set of goals for nature over the next decade through the Convention on Biological Diversity post-2020 framework process. The framework sets out an ambitious plan to implement broad-based action to bring about a transformation in society’s relationship with biodiversity and to ensure that, by 2050, the shared vision of living in harmony with nature is fulfilled.

7th Summit & Pavilion for Subnational Governments & Cities: Taking Action for Biodiversity

This summit is dedicated to taking action and making commitments, with subnational governments and cities sharing and demonstrating inspirational biodiversity initiatives, solutions and achievements. The summit and pavilion constitute an unprecedented global milestone to welcome significantly strengthened contributions from subnational governments and cities to the new post-2020 global biodiversity framework. UrbanShift will be represented by ICLEI, the summit's lead organizer; UNEP; and the cities of Chengdu, Shenzhen and Abidjan.
Greener Cities, Cooler Planet, Healthier People: Unleashing the Power of Urban Nature

Taking place on Restoration Day, this session will focus on the role of urban nature as an adaptation tool, and how national and local governments can provide access to "cooling" while mitigating climate risks and supporting biodiversity. The session will feature a discussion between global experts, countries and cities from UrbanShift and the Cool Coalition on the opportunities to catalyze restoration as part of urban planning. It will also include announcements on global collaboration in the framework of the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration.
China Day at the Pavilion for Subnational Governments & Cities

China Day aims to spotlight the rich partnerships, innovation and biodiversity actions taking place and being planned in China by local and subnational governments and partners worldwide. It will comprise of three thematic sessions, in collaboration with multiple organizations, and include the participation of 11 Chinese cities and regions.

Cities call for increased investment to halt and reverse nature loss
At the Biodiversity COP in Montreal, mayors from 15 cities called for increased direct funding for urban nature-based solutions and ecosystem restoration projects, backed by UrbanShift, UNEP, GEF, ICLEI, C40, and other partners.

URBANSHIFT MARRAKECH LAB: USING GEOSPATIAL ANALYSIS AND INDICATORS TO PRIORITIZE GREENSPACE EXPANSION AND ENHANCE URBAN BIODIVERSITY
This workshop convened representatives from the cities of Marrakech, Agadir, Beni Mellal, Rabat and Tangier, the national government and other stakeholders to prioritize greenspace expansion and biodiversity conservation in Marrakech.
